VIP No.2 / 2023 Interview with Ana Sanz
We spoke with Ana Sanz, one of the emerging artists from the last Estéreo Picnic Festival. A true gem from Bogotá, she made her debut on the stage of the best four days of the year this year. We asked her about this moment, the development of her career, the meaning her music holds for her, and what's coming up in the next few months.
1. We want to start by recalling a very emotional moment for you this year. What was your experience like at the Estéreo Picnic Festival this year? What will you take away most from that experience?
The Estéreo Picnic Festival was an unforgettable experience, full of lessons that I will always cherish. From the moment I knew I would be part of this incredible event, I knew it would be a challenge, but also a great opportunity to grow in my musical career. I was struck by how the music I make can connect with people in such a special way, and that's something I will always carry with me.
2. There's a second moment that we feel is fundamental for you, and that's your debut as an artist with the release of "Sin ver atrás" (Without Looking Back). Two years have passed since then. How has that growth been during that time?
The release of "Sin ver atrás" was a very important moment in my career. Two years have passed since then, and I've learned so much about myself and my music. This song will always have a special place in my heart because it made me discover that this was what I wanted to do.
3. Your latest work is Kinesis, where you gradually show us the maturity in your sound, blending the pop that made you famous with new nuances.
Kinesis is a very special EP for me, as it represents my quest to evolve and grow in my music. I wanted to explore new sounds and try different things. "Capullo" (Bud) was one of the first songs I composed, and it was very important to me and undoubtedly a major driving force for this EP, pushing me to seek new creative paths. Each song on the EP is unique and takes me to a different place, which was exciting to create. I hope to continue exploring and learning more in the future.
4. A somewhat personal question, but in a way, your lyrics feel like you're telling your own stories. How much can we get to know the Ana behind your projects?
Music is my way of expressing myself. Sometimes I find it difficult to talk about my feelings and thoughts, but my lyrics allow me to channel them in a very special way. My songs are coded, but if you listen carefully, you can understand many of my mental tangles and emotions. Each song tells a different story, but all together they represent me as a person.
5. Looking ahead, and after a growth that promises to bring us more and more songs, what does the next few months hold for Ana Sanz?
In recent months, I've been working on reconnecting with my music and rebuilding myself through it. I want to release my first album in the future, so I'm going to work on it these next few months to make that a reality in the near future!
6. We'd like you to recommend one Chilean artist and one Latin American artist that we should listen to, and tell us why.
I highly recommend Duplat, Piel Camaleón, Mario sabe lo que hace, Luis Aguirre, and Pilar Cabrera. They are incredible artists with enormous talent.
